Our royal pizza cravings landed us in Don Carmelo’s Pizzeria on this outing. We asked our kind server about her favorite and what was popular. The Kings ended up sampling four Carmelo’s flavors! Patience, my dear subjects, while I unfurl the scroll for these pies’ ingredients.
Combo: Beef, sausage, pepperoni, onion, mushrooms, black olive, red onion. New Yorker: Meatballs, prosciutto, ricotta, extra cheese. Chicken Pesto: Pesto sauce, grilled chicken, ricotta, Roma tomato. Popeye & Olive Oyl: White sauce, spinach, ricotta, pineapple, Kalamata Olive, fresh garlic, feta cheese. Can I get an “oink”?
Our pies arrived after about 15 minutes of beer swilling. They were hot; all of the ingredients were fresh and good quality. The pies were all well topped.
The crust was the same for all pizzas. It is hand-tossed New York style. King RJ felt the crust had a subtle flavor and was nice to chew. King JT thinks the crust wasn’t a problem, but it wasn’t special. “It was almost too perfectly formed”.
Both Kings liked the red sauce but there needed to be more. The white sauces were adequate in quantity with decent flavor.
Now some general “likes” and “dislikes”. The Kings found the Chicken Pesto pie bland…yes, you could taste the pesto. The New Yorker it made a decent run at Pudgy’s Austrian, and Sam and Louie’s Manhattan, but it fell short of those competitors’ craving ranked pies. The Combo tantalized both royals’ taste buds with an excellent pepperoni. We shall order a one-topper with pepperoni next time! The Popeye and Olive Oyl started out as a hesitant choice for King JT. It turned out to be the most intriguing and his top choice just over the Combo. “This pie is about 4.25 Crowns; I appreciate that it is different and suitable for vegetarians”. King RJ wasn’t “wowed” by the Olive, and felt the cheeses a bit strong for his taste.
How many crowns can we bestow upon our friends at Don Carmelo’s? Once again, when The Kings finally spoke in their bejeweled headgear, they both bestowed Don Carmelo’s with 3.75 Crowns!
Some final notes on Don Carmelo’s and a Royal anecdote that supports The Omaha Pizza King’s feelings toward the “mom & pop’s”. Don Carmelo’s in Rockbrook is cozy and has a nice decor. Noise levels are low. A television in the restaurant played an Italian movie…not “the game”. It turns out, our waitress was the owner’s daughter, and the creator of our Popeye & Olive Oyl pizza.
Don Carmelo’s, The Omaha Pizza Kings raise a glass to you! “A la famiglia!”
